Short & Sweet!

One more reason to use acupuncture instead of resorting to more drastic procedures: Commonly used steroid shots may worsen tennis elbow in the long run and increase chances that the painful condition will reappear, a small study found. http://www.newsmaxhealth.com/Health-News/tennis-elbow-steroid-shots-study/2013/02/05/id/489044#ixzz2K4J7N8wN

Chiropractic Patients Less Likely to Undergo Lumbar Surgery: A new study in the medical journal Spine (in press) found a strong association between chiropractic care and the avoidance of lumbar spine surgery. The American Chiropractic Association is encouraged by this and other recent research supporting chiropractic's conservative, less costly approach to low-back pain. Two additional studies reinforce ACA's longstanding position that health care providers should start with conservative approaches to treatment, such as the services provided by doctors of chiropractic, before guiding their patients to less conservative alternatives. Such an approach benefits patients and cuts health care spending. http://www.acatoday.org/press_css.cfm?CID=5086

Sunbeds Are Twice as Dangerous as Midday Sun: Experts have found that the risk of skin cancer from sunbeds is more than double that of spending the same length of time in the Mediterranean midday summer sun. The average strength of radiation was approaching twice the recommended limit. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9805775/Sunbeds-are-twice-as-dangerous-as-midday-sun-researchers.html

Salt, the Silent Assassin: Study estimates that if the average daily sodium intake of Americans were to drop instantaneously to 1,500 milligrams per day, as many as 1.2 million premature deaths could be averted over the course of a decade. http://www.latimes.com/health/boostershots/la-heb-cutting-sodium-projections-20130211,0,1738486.story

Lack of Sleep 'Switches Off' Genes: According to a new study, getting fewer than six hours' sleep per night deactivates genes which play a key role in the body's constant process of self-repair and replenishment, raising the risk of a host of illnesses including obesity and heart disease, scientists claim. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9892792/Lack-of-sleep-switches-off-genes.html

Walking is Better Than Hitting the Gym: A new study found that walking or even standing for longer stretches of time boosts metabolism and controls blood cholesterol better than more than an hour of intense exercise each day. The key is to be sure the number of calories burned during long, low-intensity workouts is the same as those expended in short bursts of intense energy. http://www.newsmaxhealth.com/Health-News/Walking-Better-Than-Hitting-Gym-to-Keep-Healthy/2013/02/15/id/490585#ixzz2LCsRlsfg

Stress and Diabetes: Men who reported permanent stress have a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than men who reported no stress. This is the finding of a 35-year prospective follow-up study of 7,500 men in Gothenburg, by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. http://scienceblog.com/59592/permanent-stress-can-cause-type-2-diabetes-in-men/#qTZErQV7Cg3uYLr6.99
